Syrs bzns guise...

Following pressure from the US Government, Canada is preparing to ram through a revamped copyright bill that will have disastrous consequences for consumers. The Government is hereby ignoring the public consultation held last year, where many Canadians spoke out against harsher copyright legislation.

The effects of a draconian copyright bill in Canada can be far reaching. Things Canadians take for granted, like copying your music from your computer to your music player and vice versa, can be deemed illegal with this new bill...

Canada woo dont care, still only effects Canadian hosted servers, US already is getting touchy so its not like we dont have to deal with it, Canadians had it good basically for ages, so who knows what Canadians actually do but this isnt law yet so no need for knickers to commence bunching.

Well, now they may have to actually pay for some knickers before they can bunch them.

Hey Eb, have you got any pirated knickers?

I don't believe in software piracy anyway. I would rather pay for the things I like.

Yeah.

The courts have held for decades that you have the right to copy anything you have bought into any format you wish to play on any platform you wish. Cassette, CD, VCR tape, etc. The industry's position, and the position of congress in the US, is that DVD's are somehow "special" and should not be copied. Knowing they could not win in a court battle, rather than making copying your own DVD illegal, they made creating and distributing software to break the encoding illegal. And end run, and another indication of the intelligence level of legislatures world wide.

It sounds like Canada's government has been eating the yellow snow. By making it illegal to copy your own property, they would be overturning decades of law. If they want to go after piracy, they should concentrate on piracy, not whether I want to listen to a CD I have purchased on my Ipod.

As a side note, the most recent study on piracy states that the majority of people who download music or movies would purchase the items if they were offered easily downloadable, online, at a reasonable price, and without silly ass protections or limits such as being only able to play on one computer. They considered 50 cents American for a song and 5 dollars American to be a fair price. I forget what they recommended for books. The entertainment industry prefers selling their product online at the same price as you would pay in a store, even though there is no packaging, distribution, shipping, display, or other costs involved.

File sharing is going to become a real big issue in about 10-15 years, when the generation of kids will have grown up never needing to pay for music. It will be an interesting test to see how the industry survives- why would someone get into music when you make zero dollars doing it?

On that note, I just bought Owl City's latest album for my mom for Mother's Day. Bought it from a local store no less. A good album.
